I instructed Dr Algar-Faria to prepare a country expert report relating to a complex Sri Lankan asylum case. His work was comprehensive and thorough. The report was appropriately referenced throughout and drew on a wide variety of up-to-date source material. The initial draft of the report and subsequent revisions were always provided on schedule.
I had the pleasure of instructing Dr Algar-Faria to provide expert evidence on a very complex refugee claim. Our client won their appeal and was granted refugee status. The expertise, care and attention to the issues, and awareness of the importance of his work to the client, shone through, and was critical to the success.
Gilberto provided an interesting range of short policy briefings for the Foreign Policy Centre website, covering issues in countries as diverse Kosovo, North Korea, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka. His research showed the breadth of his knowledge and ability to tackle different and difficult topics.
I happened to work with Dr Algar-Faria in different peacebuilding related projects in the Western Balkans. He proved to be a highly reliable and valuable partner. I was impressed with his in-depth knowledge not only on wider security concept but also project management, and he understood well the sensitivities in the Balkan context.
It was rewarding to follow and reflect with Gilberto, with a focus on state-society relations in Sri Lanka. His nuanced approach to understanding civil society and the state provided a valuable perspective, underlining the importance of a balanced and multi-partial analysis that seeks to constructively redefine our understanding of liberal peacebuilding.
